Alumni Speaker Series: A Life Through Service
On Monday, October 22, Captain Peter Gray Smith ’03 returned to campus with his wife, Katy, to talk to students about living a Life Through Service. Peter spoke to the entire Upper Campus during Community Time and then with 9th-grade boarders in the evening.
Peter joined the Army ROTC at Georgetown while attending George Washington University. He went to flight school after graduating from college, enlisted with the Texas National Guard, and more recently, was appointed to lead a platoon while being stationed outside of Baghdad, Iraq.
He began his presentation by sharing a picture of himself as an 8th-grade student at IMS. Engaged from the start, the students listened to Peter talk about the importance of education, the incredible rewards received from helping others, and being a part of something much bigger than himself. In addition to his message of selflessness and the need to develop resilience, Peter emphasized the benefits of finding joy in life.
Mr. Smith's visit is part of our Alumni Speaker Series. We are excited to engage our alumni in this way and look forward to seeing the incredible impact this will have our current students and community in the years to come.
About the IMS Alumni Speaker Series The Alumni Speaker Series is an opportunity to instill in our students, especially our ninth graders, a greater understanding of and appreciation for our school motto, Life Through Service. Alumni from all generations who embody our motto in their everyday lives are invited to campus to share more about the impact that service has had on them and on the lives of others. This kind of authentic learning is impactful and a way for our past to play a role in shaping our future.
