We encourage each student to reach his or her individual potential by providing supportive, remedial, and English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for those who need instruction beyond that offered in the classroom. Experienced tutors work with students on a one-to-one basis during the academic day and offer strategies to a student’s teachers, also monitoring his or her progress.
Supportive tutoring includes organization of time and school materials, study skills (test taking, note taking, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, etc.), and assistance with homework assignments.
Remedial tutoring includes the diagnosis of learning disabilities and prescriptive work to provide new learning techniques. Academic Support staff use the Orton-Gillingham method as the basis for the remediation of specific language-based disabilities.
English as a Second Language tutoring provides English language instruction for our students who need work beyond the ESL Humanities program on the Upper Campus.
The Academic Support services are flexible to best meet each student's needs. Department meetings enable tutors to re-evaluate and improve diagnostics, teaching techniques, and communication with the rest of the faculty at Indian Mountain School.
Two afternoons a week and on Saturday mornings, Upper Campus students meet with teachers for make-up work, enrichment, or voluntary study time.Academic Support at the Lower School
At Indian Mountain School, we recognize that student growth and development isn't always continuous: students may thrive at some points and need additional challenges or support at others. We have a number of programs to support the diverse needs of our learners, including:
- Small groups for literacy instruction
- A math specialist who supports teachers through small group pull-outs, challenge activities, and co-teaching
- Small homeroom classes with opportunities for multi-age learning and differentiated teaching
- On-site tutoring, during the school day or after school
- A whole-child approach to student success, with teachers working together to understand all aspects of the school experience
