A blank book and a day to create, contemplate, and celebrate the arts. What random things would you put in your blank book?
IMS hosted its first-ever Arts Day on the Upper Campus on Thursday, February 4, 2017, to celebrate our students’ creative and artistic work.
Art Teacher Amy Jenkins worked with her pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students to interpret Flemish paintings from the 1500s and create, with found items, their own portraits of the emerging merchant and upper classes. They fashioned and taped together paper towel rolls, coffee filters, and squares of fabric for the photo sitting and explored contemporary artists such as Nina Katchadourian for inspiration.
Each term, students choose from a variety of elective options that meet twice a week. These ungraded classes are an opportunity for teachers to share their passions and for students to try new things or dive deeper into a special interest. Art electives change each session, but examples include stone carving, digital photography, and printmaking.
