Augusta National? Pebble Beach? Winged Foot? Not quite, but golf has come to Indian Mountain School in the form of a gorgeous, 4000 square foot putting green, which can be reached from three different tee boxes. The initial idea was born at the 2010 IMS auction, when Kim Woodard GP’12, Bryan McCoy P’12 and Gregory Graham P’12, all golf enthusiasts, thought it would be a great idea to expand the exposure of golf to IMS students, knowing first hand that golf keeps people active into their later years and provides opportunity in business and social settings.

Through the increased generous support of the Woodard/McCoy family, what started as an activity for a few students to play a few times a week in the fall expanded into an opportunity for all IMS students. The spectacular backdrop of Indian Mountain and the rolling hills behind the school provide a bucolic setting for a new artificial turf putting green with eight different hole locations. Three tee boxes are under construction and will offer a 100, 150, and 200 yards, which will allow students to practice hitting with most of the clubs in their bags. The course will be used for developmental golf programs for both boys and girls as well as a school golf team during the school year and for a golf academy to complement the IMS summer program.

Says Athletic Director Courtney Zeiner, “We are still mapping out the best use of the facility and details for the new program, but are excited to be adding golf as one of our many sport options for the coming year.”

So stay tuned as we slice through the rough and drive the new program toward the flag.
