IMS Teams Rack Up Wins

By Eliza Statile

At the beginning of winter term, our teams were able to train hard and focus on their skills and conditioning. Now, our teams are competing both at home and on the road. Here are some highlights:

The Girls Varsity and Boys Varsity Basketball teams brought their energy to their home court, competing against Region 1 and Berkshire School respectively and coming out with two big wins on Friday January 21. The Girls Varsity team started out strong despite a small bench, and dug deep to bring their first win to their home court. Genesis Villegas (grade 7) tallied 14 points for the falcons. Yaps Yapi (grade 9) started out the third quarter by hitting a 3-pointer, and Rosie Muzaurieta (grade 7) also contributed on the scoreboard to a 31-12 win.

After cheering on the girls team and getting pumped up for their own, the Boys Varsity team took to the court and finished out the night with a big win against Berkshire School, 65-34.  Ninth graders Paul Coty and Jayden Hernandez pushed the tempo on the court and contributed significantly on the offensive end of the court with fast breaks and layups, as well as long range 3-pointers to secure the win.

On the road, the 5th and 6th grade Boys Basketball team added another win to their season and are now 2-0 on the road. They will look to bring home another win against rival Rumsey Hall school on February 4.

In the pool our Swim team continued their winning streak and had a successful meet against Womogo and Litchfield. The final score of the meet was 71-55 and the falcons competed well in both individual and team events.

The Ski Racing team has continued to practice at Catamount Mountain and their hard work has paid off. On Friday, January 21, they had another successful race with five IMS skiers placing in the top 10 against Rumsey, Dutchess Day School, and Washington Montessori School. Sixth grader Wynn Stern took first place again with a time of 21.67 seconds, followed by Lylli Stern in 3rd place (22.25 seconds), Porter Taxin in 6th place (24.1) seconds, Jack Maljanian in 7th place (24.52), and Clarisse Moucha in 10th place. They will look to bring home another win against Washington Montessori School and Rumsey on Friday, January 28, in the slalom.

The Varsity Ice Hockey team resumed its game schedule on January 26, when they visited New Canaan Country School. On a cold winter’s day, the outdoor rink made for a classic hockey backdrop. The team came out slow, quickly surrendering the first goal, but found it’s skating legs and proceeded to score the next four goals. 7th grader Kai Vitiello made his first IMS start in net and helped the team secure the victory, 5-3.

JV Ice Hockey played their first game of the season on  January 26 against Rumsey Hall. With no prior game experience together, the team took a little while to start playing together, but then they found some chemistry and played a hotly contested game. With the teams trading goals all game, the third period ended in a 7-7 tie. The falcons surrendered a goal shortly into the extra period to lose 8-7 but gained a lot of experience that they will carry into their next game, which happens to be against Rumsey Hall as well.

Go Falcons!
