The IMS players performed “Into the Woods Jr.” on Friday, April 20. The musical was a difficult endeavor with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, but the students rose to the challenge under the direction of Stephanie Hahn.

“Into the Woods Jr.” combines the well-known fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with the story of the Baker and his Wife who desperately want a child. Unfortunately, the Baker and his Wife have been cursed with childlessness by a witch and must perform various missions involving the characters in the other fairy tales to break the spell. The Baker and his Wife must bring the witch a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. As they search for these items they meet Little Red Riding Hood on her way to Granny’s house, Jack before he goes up his beanstalk, Cinderella running from the ball and other unexpected inhabitants of the forest. As these characters journey “into the woods” they each overcome obstacles in pursuit of what they care about most and discover the true meaning of loyalty, family, love, and leaving home.
