PARENT FAQS
What is the "Maroon and Gray Competition?"

Continuing a tradition that dates back to the earliest days of Indian Mountain, the Upper Campus student body is divided each year into two color clubs, which compete in a variety of areas, including scholarship, athletics, citizenship, and community service. Throughout the year the Assistant Head of School tracks successes in these areas, and the winning team is announced on Prize Day at the end of the year.

A major autumn event set aside for the IMS Upper Campus community to enjoy our mountain and connect with their peers across grade levels. Mountain Day is proclaimed by surprise announcement from the Head of School at Morning Assembly. For Upper Campus students, this is also an important Maroon and Gray event.

If an urgent matter arises during the school day, you can call or email our Receptionist, Emily Newkirk, at 860-435-0871 x110 and ask for a message to be conveyed to your child. We typically will not interrupt classes or sports to deliver messages unless absolutely necessary.

If your child is feeling ill, please consult with our Health Center prior to your child’s return to school.

ALL absences should be reported to the Upper Campus Receptionist or Lower School Receptionist the morning of the absence. If your child is at school, students are expected to participate in all activities. If a student comes to school late, that student is expected to check in at the main office. If you know that your child will be late, will depart early, or will be absent because of illness or some other legitimate reason, please make sure that the school office knows as close to 8:00 AM as possible. Parents will be called if their child’s whereabouts are not known.

You can find the handbook in the lower left under the Quick Links section on the main page of your Parent Portal. If you have forgotten your password to login, you can reset it on the landing page.

All of our boarding students love to get letters and packages, as students are always eager to keep up with life at home. Any type of mail or packages should be sent as follows:

Student Name
(Dorm Name)
Indian Mountain School
211 Indian Mountain Rd. Lakeville, CT 06039

The school receives mail Monday through Friday. In addition, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and other express companies deliver to the main office except on weekends. Please monitor your child’s online ordering to ensure they are making reasonable purchases for the term.

Indian Mountain School works with E & R Laundry and Dry Cleaners, Inc. of Manchester, NH to provide laundry services for our students. Laundry will be collected from the dormitories on Tuesday and returned on Thursday each week. If there are issues with the laundry, you can email info@eandrcleaners.com with descriptions of missing items or contact Mallory Toolan.

The average amount of work per night depends upon the student’s grade level and set of courses with the amount increasing as one moves up through the divisions and grades. Students may be able to complete homework during study halls throughout the day as well. In the event a student is absent from school, they are expected to make up the school work missed as soon as they are able.

The intent of the detailed dress code guidelines below is to maintain a degree of consistency in school attire within the school community. The decision to cancel or delay school due to weather safety concerns will be posted on our website by 6:15 a.m. Early dismissal decisions are made by 11:00 a.m.

The decision is posted on our website, www.indianmountain.org, broadcast through an automated system, which will call, text and email you, and the following radio and TV stations:

WKZE: 98.1FM (Red Hook, Salisbury)
WHDD: 91.9FM (Sharon)

Most delays will be 1-2.5 hours in length, if a delay is determined to be the best course of action for the day.

The parent/guardian is the best judge of the conditions where you live. Please know that if you do not think it is safe to drive or send your child on the bus, you should use your best judgment in making that decision. Conditions can vary extremely on roads and hills in the area. Please understand the safety of our students is the reason why school is canceled or delayed. We do what we can to make the most appropriate call for conditions.
