Students Partake in National Math Contest
In November, a group of 37 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math students took the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8 test. This 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics is designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills.
The objective of the test is to enable students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that will assist them in their future academic journeys and professional careers.
Math Department Chair Sheryl Knapp notes, “The fact that nearly 40 students voluntarily chose to take part in this competition shows how many creative, analytical thinkers we have at IMS. Students who chose to participate paired their classroom knowledge with problem-solving skills.”
Results from the competition are in, and we are thrilled to announce this year’s winners:
IMS 3rd Place: Oliver El Hadj, Jerry Liu, Fred Hu
IMS 2nd Place: Drew Bogardus, Stephanie Kim
IMS 1st Place: Tony Li, Yujin Kim
In addition to placing first at IMS, honor roll certificates were awarded to Tony Li and Yujin Kim for placing in the top 5% of the country.
Congratulations to all of the participants and their math teachers!
